THE Berkeley kids thought a new skateboard ramp would be waiting for them at Kully Bay Park yesterday.

They were so disappointed by the misunderstanding, community workers had to promise pizza as a consolation prize.

But come tomorrow, the keen skaters will get to enjoy a skate park for the day on loan from Wollongong City Council.

Skateboarding is just one of the free activities at the Southside Let's Get Active Festival to welcome summer to the shores of Lake Illawarra.

If BMX riding, long boat rowing, fishing or African dancing are not for you, there's tai chi, yoga and meditation. There will also be children's activities and a touch footy match with police and firefighters playing.

Community worker Sue Leppan said the festival was run by volunteers, with people like herself just in the background organising insurance and first aid.

The festival runs from 3 to 7pm in Northcliffe Dr, Warrawong Park.
