THREE Hunter ice figure skaters won gold medals at the annual Hollins Trophy tournament in Canterbury over the long weekend.

Emma Hook won the primary ladies division, Kara Johnson was the winner in the intermediate ladies and Amaris Ladd-Hudson produced the best performance in the elementary 13-years-and-over competition.

The trio upstaged competitors from not only Australia but also New Zealand at the Hollins Trophy, which is the oldest interstate ice-skating competition in the country.

Hook and Johnson will lead Hunter's charge at the NSW championships next month, where competitors will be vying for positions in the state side to compete at the Australian championships in Perth in August.

? Newcastle under-12 girls and boys basketball sides were both runners-up at the NSW Country championships, which were staged in Newcastle over the long weekend.

The girls lost the grand final 43-16 to Albury and the boys were defeated 62-24 by Gosford.

Newcastle's under-16 boys side, competing in Bathurst, lost 37-28 to Illawarra in their decider.

? Four Hunter cricketers are headed for a four-week tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland with the NSW Combined High Schools sides.

Scott Sharma (New Lambton High), Tim Northey (Cardiff High) and Taylor Nicholls (Singleton High) are in the boys team and Morgan Wilcyzinski (Raymond Terrace) is in the girls side.

The teams were picked after the NSW CHS championships in February.

? Newcastle Grammar School students Sophie Boyle, Jeremy Dawes and Sam Clifton have excelled in the sporting arena.

Boyle made the NSW All Schools under-16 hockey side following her performances playing in the NSW Combined Independent Schools open team.

Dawes has been invited into the Yachting NSW youth sailing squad, which is designed to develop skills in preparation for the 2006 Australian Youth Championships, which will be held in Brisbane.

Clifton earned selection in the NSW CIS touch team for the second year in a row and will compete at the Australian under-19 championships in Coffs Harbour later this year.
