STUDENTS of a Central Coast school swapped maths for skateboards yesterday.

Wadalba Community School hosted the 2004 Schools Skateboarding Series, which travels up and down the east coast of Australia to promote the sport with professional support.

Maths teacher Robert Gorton, himself a skateboarder, said yesterday it was an event the students were looking forward to.

``All the kids really got into it and had a lot of fun," Mr Gorton said. ``It was heavily promoted by the school so we had nearly 300 kids watching the event."

Consistency won the day for age group winners Mikey Fabre and Kyle Densmore.

``A lot of the guys were competent skaters but when it came to their run they couldn't pull off the tricks they were practising all day.

``It was consistency that won these guys their heats," Mr Gorton said.

The competition is sponsored by skateboard brand World Industries, which donated jumpers, shirts and shoes as prizes.

World Industries marketing manager Jessica Windsor said skateboarding was getting a boost in more than 35 schools.

The competition travels to Erina High School today.
